03 May Walker DesignBuild’s Randy Walker Supports Local Read and Feed Program
As a member of the Cary-Page Rotary Club, Walker DesignBuild’s Randy Walker has been involved as a tutor with Wake County’s Read and Feed Program on a weekly basis for nearly 10 years.
The mission of Read and Feed is to give low-income elementary school children an appetite for reading by strengthening literacy skills and providing encouragement in a nurturing neighborhood environment. Using mobile classrooms, meals are provided to eliminate hunger, mentors help children read, and books are available to build home libraries.
Volunteers are critical to the success of the program by helping in a number of different capacities, including food pickup and drop-off, tutoring, driving huge mobile classrooms, preparing the mobile classrooms, fundraising, administrative tasks, serving on committees, and more.
Last year, Read and Feed volunteers contributed at least 13,167 hours, which has a monetary value of $250,188.
Randy shares, “It is a great program and our students who are usually below grade level when they start the year really show signs of excelling by the end of each school year.”
